Gut health often gets overlooked when starting a diet, even though over 70% of our immune system lives in the gut. Our microbiome thrives on fiber from plant-based foods like fruits and veggies, while processed foods, sugar, and saturated fats can harm it. That's why I love supporting gut health with simple, nourishing habits, like these apple and ginger shots.

I first discovered these shots at Whole Foods, and after trying them a few times, I realized I could easily make them at home. I typically drink about 30 ml first thing in the morning to boost my gut before breakfast and coffee. I especially enjoy them in the colder months or after the holidays when my body needs a reset, but they're a refreshing year-round boost.

Ingredients

Gut refresher shots, blend the ingredients.
  • Apples: rich in fiber, especially pectin, apples feed beneficial gut bacteria and support a healthy digestive system.
  • Freshly squeezed lemon juice: with natural acidity, lemons enhance digestion and help the body's detox process.
  • Fresh ginger root: known for its powerful anti-inflammatory properties, ginger soothes the digestive tract and reduces gut inflammation.
  • Apple cider vinegar: this fermented liquid supports healthy digestion and a balanced gut microbiome thanks to its acetic acid content.
  • Coconut water: a naturally hydrating, mineral-rich beverage that replenishes electrolytes and aids digestive health.

Quick Tip

Please note that these shots can be quite acidic due to the apple cider vinegar and lemon, which may not be suitable for those with sensitive stomachs. It's always best to check with your healthcare provider before adding them to your routine. Remember, these gut shots aren't a magic fix; their benefits depend on your overall diet, fiber intake, sleep, stress levels, and existing health conditions.

Top Tip

For the best benefits, enjoy a shot first thing in the morning before breakfast or coffee, when your digestive system is most receptive.
