Why You'll Love This Recipe

The avocado spread with feta is a versatile dish that can be used as a great dip, a sandwich spread, or a topping for various dishes. It is a healthy and delicious option that is easy to prepare. The key to making the best avocado spread with feta lies in the quality of the ingredients and the balance of flavors.

I was always so busy in the past that making the avocado spread from scratch was a tiring event. When I think about it now, I can see how lazy I was. Because it only takes 10 minutes to make it 😉. But, back then, I searched for the best store-bought alternative with just several ingredients and no nasty additives. And the best brand I found is Mashed Avocado from Good Foods. So when did I realize that avocado is so easy to mash? When my first child was old enough to start the solid food. Mashing avocado with banana became her favorite breakfast. I repeated this with my other two, and they loved it, also.

Being from Serbia, I grew up eating white cheese and incorporating white cheese wherever I could. I can't find authentic white Serbian cheese in the US now, but feta has become my second favorite addition to various dishes. Thus, this spread is not an exception 😊, especially because it combines avocado's creamy texture with feta cheese's tangy taste. So yummy!

Benefits of Avocado and Feta Cheese

  • Avocado is known as an excellent source of healthy fats. They are rich in monounsaturated, heart-healthy fats that can help reduce bad cholesterol levels and lower the risk of heart disease.
  • Avocado is also rich in dietary fiber, which aids in digestion, helps control blood sugar levels, and supports weight management.
  • Avocado is rich in vitamins and minerals and is also known to help the absorption of fat-soluble vitamins (A, D, E, and K) and other nutrients from other foods you consume.
  • Feta cheese is a good source of protein, which is essential for muscle repair and overall body function.
  • Feta cheese provides significant calcium, which is crucial for bone health, muscle function, and nerve transmission.
  • Feta cheese is lower in lactose than other dairy products, making it a suitable option for individuals with lactose intolerance.
  • When combined, avocados and feta cheese balance healthy, good fat, protein, and a wide range of vitamins and minerals, offering a nutritious and satisfying meal or snack. This combination of healthy fats and protein can help keep you full and satisfied, potentially reducing the urge to snack between meals 😏.

Ingredients You'll Need to Make this Healthy Spread with Avocado and Feta

  • 2 ripe avocados - Gently press the skin to ensure you are working with a perfectly ripe avocado. If it yields slightly, it's ripe. If it feels mushy, it's overripe and may have brown spots. You can add some diced tomatoes or onions to the spread for a chunkier texture of your avocado spread.
  • 1-2 garlic cloves, minced - you can also add garlic powder. Also, you can mix in the finely diced red onion, adding a bit of crunch to the creamy avocado spread.
  • Juice of 1 lemon - To prevent the avocado spread from browning, add a generous amount of lemon juice and store it in an airtight container. The lemon juice acts as a natural preservative. Instead of lemon juice, you can use lime juice.
  • Sea salt and black pepper to taste.
  • ¼ cup extra-virgin olive oil - you can also use avocado oil or vegetable oil
  • ¼ cup crumbled feta cheese - you can buy crumbled feta cheese at the grocery store or crumble a block of feta with your fingers.
  • Optional add-ins: chopped cilantro, diced tomatoes, red pepper flakes, or chili powder.

Step-by-Step Instructions in this Avocado Spread Recipe

  • Prepare the Avocados: Cut the avocados in half, remove the pit, and scoop the avocado flesh into a mixing bowl.
  • Mash the Avocado: Use a fork or a potato masher to mash the avocado until it reaches your desired consistency. Depending on your preference, you can leave it slightly chunky or make it smooth.
  • Add Flavors: Mince the fresh garlic on a cutting board using a garlic press. Mix in the minced garlic.
  • Citrus Juice: Squeeze the juice of a lemon over the mixture. The fresh lemon juice adds flavor and helps prevent the avocado from browning.
  • Olive oil: Add olive oil to enhance the flavor and contribute healthy monounsaturated fats to the spread. It can make the texture smoother and more spreadable, providing a delightful fruity undertone to the overall taste.
  • Mix Well: Gently mix all the ingredients until everything is combined to a creamy consistency.
  • Seasoning: Season with salt and pepper to taste. You can start with a small amount and adjust as needed.
  • Add feta: Crumble feta with your hands (or use store-bought crumbled feta) and mix well with a spoon.
  • Taste and Adjust: Taste the avocado spread and adjust the seasoning or other ingredients according to your preference. You can add more lime/lemon juice, feta, salt, or any optional add-ins.
  • Serve: Transfer the avocado spread to a serving dish. You can enjoy it immediately or cover it with plastic wrap, pressing the wrap directly onto the surface of the spread to prevent browning and refrigerate until you're ready to serve.
  • Enjoy: Serve the avocado spread with your favorite tortilla chips, pita chips, crackers, and toast as a sandwich spread or a topping for various dishes.
Can I use ripe avocados for this creamy avocado with feta recipe?

Yes, ripe avocados are ideal for this recipe. They should be soft to the touch but not overly mushy.

Can I customize the ingredients in this recipe?

Absolutely! You can adjust the ingredients to suit your taste. For example, add red pepper flakes for some heat or cilantro, parsley, or other fresh herbs.

How do I store leftover avocado spread?

To prevent browning, press plastic wrap directly onto the surface of the spread to minimize air exposure. Store it in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 1-2 days.

Is avocado spread with feta healthy?

Avocado is a nutritious source of healthy fats, fiber, and vitamins, while feta cheese provides protein and calcium. However, moderation is vital due to the calorie content of avocado and cheese.

Can I make this spread in advance for a party?

Yes, you can prepare the Avocado Spread with Feta a few hours before your party and refrigerate it. Just make sure to cover it well to prevent browning.
