There’s something magical about the aroma of freshly baked bagels. Imagine twisting that experience to a new level—making Yogurt Bagels in the Air Fryer. It takes 12 minutes to bake this perfect breakfast staple on a busy morning.

With just a handful of ingredients, this recipe promises ease, speed, and an irresistible outcome. The best part is that you can mix everything in one large bowl, and with no wait period, kraft your bagels, sprinkle your favorite bagel seasoning, and pop them in the preheated air fryer until they become golden brown. It is a perfect, easy bagel recipe if you ask me.

Why You’ll Love This Recipe

There’s something special about the aroma of homemade bread filling your kitchen (at least, that’s how I feel about it 😏). This recipe allows you to enjoy creating something delicious from scratch.

You can have freshly baked bagels on your table in just a few simple steps. The air fryer accelerates the cooking process, ensuring you can satisfy your bagel cravings in no time 😉.

You’ve added a nutritious twist to the classic recipe by incorporating yogurt into the bagel dough. Enjoy the benefits of yogurt while relishing homemade bagels’ delightful texture and flavor.

Ingredients You’ll Need and Substitutions

  • 1 cup whole wheat flour and 1 cup all-purpose flour – I like to substitute a portion of all-purpose flour for whole wheat flour for a healthier version. I also prefer using white whole wheat flour.
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 3/4 cup plain yogurt – I used regular plain yogurt, but many people use Greek yogurt. In my experience, regular plain yogurt works just fine.
  • 1 whole egg for egg wash (both egg white and egg yolk) – some people like using egg whites only for the wash; a whole egg wash provides color, shine, and a slightly richer flavor
  • 1 teaspoon salt – I use sea salt in this recipe.
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil – avocado oil or vegetable oil will also work.
  • I used everything bagel seasoning mix, but you can use bagel toppings of your choice, such as sesame seeds, poppy seeds, minced garlic, or shredded cheese.
  • Note: I prefer mixing the flour with baking powder from scratch, a homemade version of self-rising flour. But, if you prefer using store-bought self-rising flour, omit baking powder and salt because they are already added to the self-rising flour.

Step-by-step Instructions on How to Make These Easy Homemade Bagels

  1. Combine the flour, baking powder, salt, and plain yogurt in a large mixing bowl. Mix well until the dough forms. You can use a spatula or your hands to bring the ingredients together.
  2. Transfer the ball of dough to a lightly floured, clean work surface and knead it for about 3-5 minutes until it becomes smooth.
  3. Divide the dough into 4 equal pieces to form individual bagels. Roll each portion into a ball and then shape it into a bagel shape by poking a hole in the center. Ensure the hole is wide enough, as the bagels will expand during cooking.
  4. Place the bagels on the parchment paper. Crack and whisk one egg in a small bowl. Brush each bagel with the egg wash, giving them a beautiful golden sheen after baking.
  5. Add your favorite toppings at this stage—sesame seeds, poppy seeds, minced garlic, or shredded cheese all work wonderfully. I used everything bagel seasoning. Sprinkle enough to cover the tops of the bagels.
  6. Place bagels in the preheated air fryer basket, leaving some space between them. Cook at 325F for about 10-12 minutes or until the bagels are golden brown and have a delightful crispiness on the outside.
  7. Allow the yogurt bagels to cool for a few minutes before slicing.
  8. Pair them with your favorite cream cheese or smoked salmon for an authentic New York experience.

Helpful Tips and Tricks

  • Knead the Dough Thoroughly. Spend enough time kneading the dough to develop gluten, which gives the bagels their characteristic chewiness. Aim for a smooth and elastic texture.
  • Preheat the Air Fryer. I own a Ninja 4 Qt Air Fryer. Preheat the air fryer before placing the bagels inside. This helps achieve an even and consistent cooking temperature, resulting in well-cooked bagels.
  • Apply the egg wash evenly on the bagels before baking. This enhances the color and contributes to a shiny and slightly crispy exterior.
  • If you have leftovers, store the bagels in an airtight container. To reheat, use the air fryer briefly to maintain their freshness.

Quick Tip!

Keep a close eye on the bagels while they’re in the air fryer. Cooking times can vary, so adjust as needed to achieve the desired level of crispiness and color. I own a Ninja 4 Qt Air Fryer. This recipe is for four bagels; I could fit all four in my basket (please see the video).
