I don’t know about you, but when I want to lose weight, I always pick sweet potato fries instead of traditional fries at the restaurant 😀. But, in reality, are they really healthier? They both have a similar profile of carbs, but sweet potato fries have way higher amounts of vitamin A.

It appears that sweet potato is better than regular potato, but the problem is how they are both prepared in restaurants. You probably guessed – deep fried. So, no matter their nutrition profile, it will be downgraded by this traditional cooking process. So, what do we do then? Another guess? Air fry homemade wedges by yourself 👌!

Using minimal ingredients (which you probably have in your pantry), you can create a perfect healthy side dish with less oil and in less time than regular french fries made in a deep fryer.

Why You’ll Love This Recipe

Because it’s so quick and simple! If you are a busy person (who isn’t, right?), you’ll know how to appreciate the simplicity of air frying. These crispy sweet potato wedges are easy to make and pack a nutritional punch.

With the help of an air fryer, you can achieve that perfect level of crispiness without deep frying them in oil. Again, I have to mention that this is a great, healthy way to indulge in a delicious, carb-rich, healthy alternative to traditional white potatoes.

The Air Fryer: A Game Changer

I’ve heard so many stories about air frying; honestly, I wasn’t sure if I should believe how quickly and efficiently it cooks food.

A good friend cooked in an air fryer frequently, and I had dinner at her house multiple times. One time, she cooked steak (yes, steak!), and it blew my mind.

So, I decided to give it a try. Oh, boy, what a good decision I made! I now use it more often than the oven, and the part I like the most is how quickly the food is done.

The air fryer uses hot air circulation to cook food perfectly, achieving the coveted crispy exterior while keeping the interior tender and flavorful.

Preheating the air fryer is crucial to ensure even cooking. Spraying the air fryer basket or tray with a bit of cooking spray is also very important to prevent any potential sticking.

Adobo Seasoning

Adobo seasoning is a popular and versatile spice blend in many Latin American and Spanish cuisines. It typically combines savory and aromatic spices, varying depending on regional preferences.

Adobo seasoning is incredibly versatile and can be used as a dry rub for meats, as a seasoning for stews, soups, and rice dishes, or as a flavor enhancer for marinades.

While there isn’t a fixed recipe for adobo seasoning, common ingredients may include garlic, onion, salt, black pepper, oregano, paprika, bay leaf, and turmeric.

Because of its incredible versatility and savory and aromatic qualities, adobo seasoning perfectly complements sweet potatoes’ natural sweetness.

Substitutions/Variations

  • If you prefer instead of olive oil, feel free to use avocado oil or vegetable oil
  • If you don’t have adobo seasoning in your pantry, you can easily use onion powder, garlic powder, dried oregano, paprika, and turmeric
  • If you use adobo seasoning, make sure not to add too much salt, black pepper, and paprika since the adobo seasoning already has some.
  • You can get creative and experiment with different spice blends, herbs, or grated Parmesan cheese to create unique flavors.

How to make Air Fryer Sweet Potato Wedges (Step-by-step Instructions)

  1. Prepare the Sweet Potatoes: Wash and scrub the sweet potatoes thoroughly under running cold water. Pat them dry using a clean kitchen towel or paper towel to remove excess moisture. Cut off both ends of each sweet potato on a cutting board using a sharp knife, then slice them lengthwise into evenly thick wedges.
  2. Season the Sweet Potatoes: Add the sweet potato wedges to a large bowl. Combine the olive oil, paprika, Adobo seasoning, salt, and black pepper. Toss the sweet potatoes until they are evenly coated with the seasoning and oil mixture.
  3. Preheat the Air Fryer: Preheat your air fryer to 355°F – 370°F for a few minutes. The temperature and exact cooking time depend on the type and size of the air fryer you have. Mine is Cuisinart Compact, which has a manual temperature set, and what worked for me was the temperature of around 355 degrees f.
  4. Spray the Air Fryer Basket: Lightly coat the air fryer basket or tray with cooking spray to prevent the sweet potato wedges from sticking.
  5. Air Fry the Sweet Potato Wedges: Place the seasoned sweet potato wedges in a single layer in the air fryer basket. Avoid overcrowding, as this can lead to uneven cooking. You may need to cook the wedges in batches, depending on the size of your air fryer.
  6. Air Fry: Cook the sweet potato wedges at 350°F (165°C) for about 12 minutes, flipping them halfway through. The exact cooking time may vary depending on your air fryer and the thickness of the wedges. They are done when they are crispy on the outside and tender on the inside.
  7. Serve: Once they are done, remove the sweet potato wedges from the air fryer and serve immediately. You can sprinkle a little extra salt or your favorite seasoning for an extra burst of flavor.
  8. Optional Dipping Sauce: Consider serving the sweet potato wedges with your favorite dipping sauce, such as ketchup, mayo, ranch dressing, or garlic aioli.

Helpful Tips and Tricks

  • Opt for fresh, firm, sweet potatoes free from bruises or soft spots. Choose sweet potatoes that are of similar size for even cooking.
  • Cut the sweet potatoes into evenly sized-wedges. This ensures that they cook uniformly, resulting in consistent texture and crispiness.
  • Arrange the seasoned wedges in a single layer in the air fryer basket. Overcrowding can lead to uneven cooking, so cook in batches if necessary.
  • Flip them halfway through the cooking time to ensure that the wedges cook evenly. This helps both sides crisp up nicely.
  • Cook time may vary depending on the size and thickness of your sweet potato wedges and the specific air fryer model. Keep an eye on them, and be ready to adjust the cooking time as needed.

Quick Tip!

Preheating your air fryer is an important step to ensure even cooking. Preheating allows the air fryer to reach the desired cooking temperature before you add your food.

Storage and Reheating

  • Sweet potato wedges are at their best when served hot and fresh. But If you have leftover sweet potato wedges, storing them properly is essential to maintain their quality and flavor.
  • Allow the sweet potato wedges to cool to room temperature before storing. Transfer the leftovers to an airtight container or a resealable plastic bag. Place them in the refrigerator. Properly stored, sweet potato wedges can be refrigerated for up to 3-4 days.
  • Reheat refrigerated sweet potato wedges in your air fryer for about 5 minutes. Another option is to place them on a baking sheet in a single layer and heat them in the oven at 375°F (190°C) for about 10-15 minutes or until they are thoroughly heated and crispy, flipping them once during the process.
  • Microvawe is not an ideal option to reheat your leftover potato wedges as they may not be as crispy.
