Breakfast Benefits and Why Not to Skip It

I have been bragging about not skipping breakfast in several of my posts so far. And the idea is simple; our brains need food in the morning for optimal functioning, and we are responsible for providing healthy fuel.

Even though you might think that french toast is not a good option, you don’t have to think twice because it is. It is loaded with carbs from bread and protein from eggs, and adding fruits on top will provide the benefits of vitamins and fiber.

However, how healthy it is will depend on the ingredients you use. This specifically applies to the amount of sugar you add and how many eggs are used in the mixture. The same goes for toppings – you should control the amount of maple syrup, fruit jam, or even Nutella you add (yes, my kids love french toast with Nutella).

If you wonder how many eggs are safe to consume daily, check out my Cheesy Scrambled Eggs (with Feta) recipe for information. And if you want to learn why breakfast is beneficial for our health, check out my Benefits of Breakfast (Yogurt Parfait) post.

How to Prepare Cinnamon French Toast

Time needed: 30 minutes

This recipe is for nine thin slices of bread, which should be enough for four people.

  1. Step 1

Beat eggs in a shallow bowl, either with a fork or with a whisk. Add milk, brown sugar, and cinnamon and mix well.

  2. Step 2

Add about 2 tbsp of oil to a skillet and heat it over medium heat.

I typically set up two skillets on the stove to speed up cooking and use both simultaneously.

  3. Step 3

While waiting for the oil to heat up, slice each piece of bread into a triangle to have 18 triangles total.

  4. Step 4

Dip a triangle in the egg mixture and flip to ensure both sides are coated. Leave the bread in the mix briefly because the bread will break apart. 2-3 seconds per side is enough.

  5. Step 5

Place the triangle on the hot skillet and add a thin slice of butter on top of the triangle. Cook until golden brown and flip to the other side (add a thin piece of butter on this side). Repeat until all triangles are used up.

Note: you might need to add more oil to cook other triangles, but make your judgment as you go.

  6. Step 6

Add maple syrup over the triangles and top it with the fruits of your choice.

Note: sliced bananas and berries go excellent with french toast!

  • 1 tsp cinnamon powder
  • 2 tbsp avocado oil or vegetable oil

  • 9 slices bread country white pan loaf from Whole Foods

Instructions

  • Beat eggs in a shallow bowl, either with a fork or with a whisk. Add milk, brown sugar, and cinnamon and mix well.
  • Add about 2 tbsp of oil to a skillet and heat it over medium heat.
I typically set up two skillets on the stove to speed up cooking and use both simultaneously.
  • While waiting for the oil to heat up, slice each piece of bread into a triangle to have 18 triangles total.
  • Dip a triangle in the egg mixture and flip to ensure both sides are coated. Leave the bread in the mix briefly because the bread will break apart. 2-3 seconds per side is enough.
  • Place the triangle on the hot skillet and add a thin slice of butter on top of the triangle. Cook until golden brown and flip to the other side (add a thin piece of butter on this side). Repeat until all triangles are used up.
Note: you might need to add more oil to cook other triangles, but make your judgment as you go.

Notes

I typically set up two skillets on the stove to speed up cooking and use both simultaneously.
You might need to add more oil than what is listed in the recipe to cook all triangles, but make your judgment as you go.
I used a country white pan loaf from Whole Foods in this recipe. It is a soft type of bread that absorbs the egg mixture quickly, so I typically dip it in it for no more than 2-3 seconds per side.
