What is a Classic Greek Frappe?

You might know it as Greek Frappe, and that’s because it originated in Greece back in 1957. The story goes that a Nestlé employee, unable to find hot water for his Nescafé, improvised with cold water instead—and the frappe was born!

Today, this drink is a favorite in Greece and throughout the Balkans. In my home country of Serbia, you can find it in almost every café and restaurant, often called a “Cold Nescafé with Milk.”

What You Need to Make Nescafe Frappe

  • 1 teaspoon Nescafé instant coffee (for a stronger brew, use 2 teaspoons)
  • 1/4 cup cold water
  • Sugar to taste (optional) or your preferred sweetener
  • 1/4 cup milk (the original recipe uses regular milk for the best flavor, but you can substitute with plant-based options like almond or coconut milk)
  • Ice cubes (optional)
  • Cocoa powder for sprinkling

How to Make this Blended Homemade Greek Frappe

  1. In a tall glass, combine the Nescafé and cold water. Add sugar if desired.
  2. Use a milk frother to blend the coffee, water, and sugar mixture until it becomes frothy and thick. This should take about 15-20 seconds.
  3. If you like your frappe cold, add a few ice cubes to the glass.
  4. Pour the cold milk into the glass over the coffee mixture.
  5. Top the drink with a light dusting of cocoa powder for added flavor.
  6. Serve immediately with a straw, and enjoy your smooth and refreshing Greek Frappe!

Can I make a Greek Frappe without a milk frother?

Yes, you can use a shaker, jar with a lid, or even a handheld blender to achieve the frothy texture without a milk frother.

Can I use any instant coffee to make a Greek Frappe?

While Nescafé is the traditional choice, you can use any instant coffee you prefer. The taste might vary slightly depending on the brand.

Quick Tip!

For an extra frothy frappe, make sure to froth the coffee mixture really well before adding the milk. The more you froth it, the creamier and more delicious your frappe will be!
