Trying out the latest TikTok trend can be a great idea when you’re looking for a fast and yummy dinner. Take, for instance, the viral smash burger tacos recipe.

Why You Will Love This Recipe

I decided to put my spin on it by using ground turkey instead of ground beef to make it healthier. I also chose toppings my family loves and added some seasoned shredded cabbage for extra flavor. I also whipped up a simple homemade special sauce to top it off.

If you’re feeling the rush (who isn’t these days 😏), this dinner is just what you need – quick, simple, and healthy. It’s perfect for adding some excitement to your weeknight meals in no time. These Smash Burger tacos are made with lean turkey, blending the flavors of burgers and tacos into one tasty dish 😉.

I whipped this up last Tuesday because my daughter Teodora always insists on Taco Tuesdays 😂. If you’re searching for a fast and fun twist on regular tacos (let’s be honest, eating the same thing every Tuesday can get dull 😊), this delectable combo of two favorites – tacos and turkey burgers – is just the ticket.

It blends the juicy deliciousness of classic burgers with the lean and tasty qualities of turkey, all wrapped up in your choice of flour tortillas or corn tortillas. It was a hit with my family; I’d love to hear how it goes with yours!

Ingredients You’ll Need

  • 1 pound of ground turkey – I used ground turkey breast (99% lean), but you can also use dark ground turkey with more fat (93% lean)
  • 1 tsp salt – it’s safe to use less salt, but I wouldn’t recommend using more 😏
  • 1 tsp paprika – if you like the burger spicy, you can use hot paprika or even chili powder
  • 1 tsp black pepper – or less or more per your taste
  • 1 tsp dried Italian seasoning – even adding oregano only will work here
  • 1 tsp mustard – any mustard will do the trick here, honestly. Its primary purpose is adding moisture to the burgers, mainly if you use 99% lean meat.
  • 1/2 cup olive oil – you can also use vegetable oil, avocado oil, or grapeseed oil.
  • Six tortillas – corn tortillas or flour tortillas. I used whole-wheat flour tortillas in my recipe.
  • About 1 cup feta cheese – if you prefer a robust and tangy flavor, crumbled blue cheese works just as well.
  • 1/3 small fresh cabbage – shredded into thin strips. You can go with green or purple cabbage, whichever you prefer.
  • 1/2 cup sour cream and 1/2 cup ketchup
  • In addition to the spices listed earlier, consider adding garlic powder or onion powder to the ground turkey before shaping it into patties. Alternatively, you can skip the recommended spices and use taco seasoning instead.

Preparation Tips

  • Combine the ground turkey, salt, paprika, black pepper, Italian seasoning, and mustard in a large mixing bowl. Mix well until all the spices are evenly distributed throughout the turkey.
  • Portion the seasoned ground turkey into six small balls.
  • Using a flat spatula or the back of a spoon, smash each turkey ball down into a thin patty on a flour or corn tortilla (please see the video for instructions)
  • Heat a large skillet over medium heat and add the olive oil (or your preferred cooking oil).
  • Place the turkey tortilla on the skillet with the meat side facing down and the tortilla side facing up. Press down on the top of the tortilla with a large spatula to smash the turkey into the hot pan. Since the turkey patties are thin, they only need 5-6 minutes to cook.
  • Turn the tortilla over so that the turkey side is now facing upwards. Sprinkle a handful of feta cheese over the turkey (adjust the amount to your preference), then flip it again so the turkey with the feta faces downwards. Cook until the cheese melts, approximately 2-3 minutes, until you achieve a crispy tortilla.
  • Please take a look at the recipe card below for the full recipe and nutrient information.

Quick Tip!

Press them down firmly onto the skillet with a flat spatula when cooking the turkey patties. This helps create a crispy outer layer while ensuring even cooking throughout.

Turkey Smash Taco Topping Preparation

  • Begin by removing any loose or damaged outer leaves from the cabbage head. Rinse the cabbage thoroughly under cold water to remove dirt or debris.
  • Lay the cabbage on a cutting board with the stem end facing down. Use a sharp knife to remove the stem and carefully create a flat base. This will make it easier to handle.
  • Cut the cabbage in half vertically, from top to bottom. Take one-half of the cabbage and lay it flat-side down on the cutting board. Begin slicing the cabbage into thin strips using your knife. You can cut the cabbage crosswise to create these strips.
  • Transfer the shredded cabbage to a medium bowl. Season with salt and pepper to your liking, and then drizzle with olive oil. Mix everything thoroughly.
  • In a separate small bowl, combine sour cream, ketchup, one tablespoon of olive oil, and a handful of crumbled feta cheese.
  • Top the turkey tortilla with the prepared sauce, then add the seasoned shredded cabbage.
  • Serve immediately and enjoy the tasty combination of juicy turkey patties and tacos! You can serve it as is or alongside french fries or sweet potato fries.
  • Note: If you prefer different toppings, use your favorite burger toppings, such as sweet relish, red onion, iceberg lettuce, and tomatoes. You can also add a slice of American cheese or cheddar cheese to the taco burger immediately after removing it from the skillet.
  • You can switch up the sauces by trying Worcestershire sauce and pair it with fresh veggies like cherry tomatoes or cucumbers. These turkey burger smash tacos are delicious alongside a corn salad or black beans.
